EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing)
Rowan Newby
EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner
Letting go of past fears.
Traumatic or very frightening memories are stored differently in the brain to other memories, which often means that they continue to cause anxiety or affect behaviour sometimes long after the original event. EMDR is a clinically tested psychological therapy using eye movement, hand taps or sounds to increase the speed of processing of traumatic memories, resulting in the memory being stored in the same way as non-problematic memories and thus ceasing to have a negative impact in the here and now.
EMDR is recommended by the NICE guidelines in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and is also helpful in allowing individuals to come to terms with difficult, frightening or painful episodes in their past.
I am fully trained in EMDR and accredited by EMDR Europe. I am also accredited Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) therapist. Where appropriate, I integrate the two therapies in order to work with both current problems and events in the past which might have contributed to those difficulties.
I regularly use EMDR in medico-legal work.
